Who we are
LYFE Offshore is an iOS application for offshore sailors, developed by Kalle Coster, based in the Netherlands. We take your privacy seriously — both because it's the law and because we think it's the right way to build software.
If you have any questions about this policy, reach us at privacy@lyfeoffshore.com.
What data we collect — and what we don't
LYFE Offshore is designed to process as much as possible directly on your device. Here's exactly what we collect and what stays local.
Newsletter email address
If you subscribe to product updates on our website, we collect your name and email address. That's it. No phone number, no account created.
GPS and location data — on-device by default
The app uses your device's GPS to power Anchor Watch, AIS Watch, and other features. This data is processed entirely on your iPhone. It is only transmitted to our servers if you explicitly start sharing a trip — see the trip sharing section below.
NMEA sensor data — on-device by default
Data from connected instruments — wind speed, depth, heading, battery voltage, and other NMEA streams — is processed locally on your device in real time. None of this is uploaded, stored remotely, or shared, with one exception: if you share a trip, wind readings are included in the trip data you publish.
To be explicit: by default the app does not phone home. Your vessel's position, route, and sensor readings stay on your device unless you deliberately start sharing a trip. What happens on your boat stays on your boat — until you decide otherwise.
Trip sharing — optional, and public by design
Trip sharing is off by default. Nothing in this section applies until you explicitly start sharing a trip in the app. When you do, you are choosing to publish your trip — to anyone with the link, and on the public LYFE fleet map. The app tells you this before you start.
What we collect while you share
Your vessel's position and track, speed, heading, wind speed and direction, anchor position, timestamps, and trip status — plus the boat name, trip name, and destination you enter. This is sent to our servers for as long as the trip is active.
Where it is visible
On your trip's public live page (anyone with the link can view it; the link is shareable by design) and on the LYFE fleet map shown to other app users. Don't put anything in a boat name or trip name you wouldn't want public.
How long we keep it
Trip data is automatically and permanently deleted 15 days after the trip ends. Stopping a trip stops all transmission immediately. If you want a trip removed sooner, email us and we'll delete it.
Follower counter on live pages
Live pages show how many people followed a trip. To count unique visitors we compute a one-way hash from the trip, the visitor's IP address, and browser type. The raw IP address is never stored, and the hashes are deleted together with the trip. No cookies, no tracking across pages or trips.
How we use your email address
If you subscribed to our updates, we use your email address to:
- Send occasional product updates, new feature announcements, and notes from offshore sailing
- Notify you about significant releases or features that may affect how you use the app
- Respond to any support or feedback you send us
We will not sell your email address. We will not share it with third-party marketers. You can unsubscribe from any email we send with a single click, and we'll remove you from our list promptly.
Third-party services
Our website and trip sharing backend run on Cloudflare infrastructure, which hosts the site, receives newsletter signups, and stores active trip data. Cloudflare acts as a data processor on our behalf. We do not run third-party analytics scripts on our site or in the app. We do not use tracking pixels, advertising networks, or social media SDKs.
If this changes in the future, we'll update this policy and communicate the change clearly before it takes effect.
Data storage and security
Newsletter email addresses are stored securely with our hosting provider. We retain your email only for as long as you remain subscribed or until you request deletion. Shared trip data is stored encrypted in transit and at rest, and is deleted automatically as described above. We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data from unauthorised access.
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. If you believe your data has been compromised, please contact us immediately at support@lyfeoffshore.com.
Your rights under GDPR
LYFE Offshore is based in the Netherlands, and we process data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). As a user, you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data
- Erasure — ask us to delete your data (the right to be forgotten)
- Portability — request your data in a common machine-readable format
- Object — object to processing for direct marketing at any time

LYFE Offshore is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with their email address, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Where the changes are significant, we'll also send a notification to newsletter subscribers. Your continued use of the app or website after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
